Published research

Sentiment needs context.

I led an early study of social-media sentiment following the killing of Priyantha Kumara Diyawadana, presented as an ASONAM poster.

My role

I was first author, with Muhammad Usama and Momin Uppal.

Where it stands

IEEE/ACM ASONAM 2022 poster. Sentiment analysis is not the same as a validated extremist-content classifier.

What changed.

A published two-page poster with preliminary analysis and a proposed context-aware research direction.

What I measured

The study collected a case-specific set of tweets and examined polarity and subjectivity. The visual analysis supported preliminary observations about the sample, not automatic judgments about individual people.

What remained a proposal

The poster outlined the context a fuller framework would need: offline events, online channels and the meaning of different content types. Building and validating that framework was beyond the poster's delivered scope.

The stack

  • Python
  • Twint
  • Sentiment analysis
  • Data visualization
